Priorities

Public schools

Strong public schools

A child’s postcode should not decide the quality of the school they attend. Stable funding, respected teachers and safe buildings are where that starts.

Three commitments

  1. Fund students, not buildings. A weighted formula that sends more support to students learning English, living in poverty or with disabilities.
  2. Keep good teachers. Starting pay that matches other graduate professions, and mentoring for every first-year teacher.
  3. Fix the buildings. A ten-year repair plan with published priorities, starting with heating, ventilation and lead-free water.

Parents at the table

We train parents to read school budgets and to speak at board meetings. Last year 340 parents completed the course; 41 now serve on school site councils.

Education policy is often written for families rather than with them. We think that is backwards.
