Fair elections

Fair and open elections

Every eligible person should be able to register, vote and have that vote counted without waiting in a four-hour line or guessing which rules apply this year.

What we are asking for

  • Automatic registration when residents interact with a state agency, with a clear opt-out.
  • Two weeks of early voting, including two weekends, in every county.
  • Paper ballots and routine audits so results can be checked by anyone who wants to look.
  • Independent redistricting commissions that draw maps in public, with public data.

Why it matters

Turnout in the counties we work in swings by as much as nineteen points between neighbouring precincts. The difference is rarely enthusiasm. It is distance to a polling place, the hours it keeps, and whether a first-time voter knows which ID to bring.

When voting is predictable, people plan for it. When it changes every cycle, the people with the least time to spare are the ones who give up.

How we work on it

Our volunteers staff non-partisan help lines in six languages, publish plain-language guides to local rules, and sit in on county canvasses as public observers. We testify on every election bill that reaches committee, and we publish our testimony so members can hold us to it.

We do not tell anyone how to vote. We work so that everyone can.
