Coalition welcomes passage of the Voting Access Act

The Civica Alliance and 37 partner organisations welcomed today’s final vote on the Voting Access Act, which adds a second weekend of early voting and automatic registration at transit and housing offices.

“This law is the work of thousands of volunteers who stood in line, took notes and came back to tell legislators what they saw,” said Maya Okafor, executive director of the Civica Alliance. “It will make voting a little more predictable for everyone.”

What changes

  • Early voting extends from 10 to 14 days, including two weekends.
  • Residents are registered automatically when they apply for transit passes or housing assistance, unless they opt out.
  • Counties must publish wait-time data after every election.

What comes next

The Act takes effect on 1 January. The Alliance will run public information sessions in every county this autumn, and will publish a county-by-county implementation tracker on this site.
