Between 7am and 8pm on primary day, our volunteers answered 2,318 calls. Most were simple. A few changed whether someone voted at all.
Rosa has volunteered on the help line for four elections. She keeps a notebook of the questions she hears most: Where is my polling place? Can I vote if I moved last month? What if my name is not on the list?
“The answer is almost always yes, you can vote,” she says. “People just need someone calm to explain how.”
At 6:40pm, a caller said a polling place had closed its doors early. Rosa logged the report, our legal team called the county clerk, and the doors reopened eleven minutes later. Forty-two people voted in those final minutes.
Volunteers need no legal background. Training takes one evening, and we pair every new volunteer with an experienced one.
