Plain-language explainers on the policies that shape daily life.

What the new state budget means for your family

The budget signed this week runs to 1,400 pages. Here are the six changes most likely to reach your kitchen table, explained without the jargon.

1. Child care credits grow

The child care tax credit rises from $1,200 to $1,800 per child under six, and is now refundable, so families who owe little tax still receive it.

2. Insulin costs are capped

From January, out-of-pocket costs for insulin are capped at $35 a month for state-regulated plans.

3. School repair fund

A new $900 million fund pays for heating, ventilation and water repairs, with the oldest buildings first.

4. Transit fares stay flat

A one-off grant keeps fares unchanged for two years while the regional plan is finalised.

5. Rental assistance is extended

Emergency rental assistance continues through next June, with a simpler online application.

6. What is missing

The budget does not fund the promised expansion of rural clinics. We will keep pressing for it in the spring session.
